Wk 6 Reflection on Learning

For me the most interesting part of the paper has possibly been the chapter World of War, it really widened my horizons in terms of maps and the fight for borders. I enjoyed the image analysis the most, as I found it easier to write about. I have the work load to be a struggle especially when tying it in with other work, it is also hard when once you have finished one weeks task you get made to do the next ones almost right away. Understanding the different forms of essay writing has been quite interesting however I don’t find this freedom of writing style to be possible with these Assessment. As of yet I have found the idea of context the most usual and practicing image analysis, I am struggling to enjoy the essay writing and did not think it would be as present in BDes. I do have a new appreciation for a paper like this as I see it being usual in the future… hopefully.

Week 6 Task 4

The video I chose Yinka Shonibare, Nelsons Ship in a Bottle.  The video focuses on Shonibare talking about his work, and what he wants from people to see. He says ‘I want people to enter a different world,’ when he creates something he wants people to be in a fantasy, to him that is what his art is about. The question raised to me is about how slavery and  wars that have occurred in Africa due the colonies of other countries. It dawned me for the first time, that this could be another piece to talk about in my essay. It relates to Mirzoeff in the retrospect of land and borders but can be widened off with the context of slavery in land. Could allow me to talk about the movement in the U.S to free slavery. The way Shonibare talks about his work is quite inspiring in his diligence towards his ancestory and his passion as an artist. His efforts into his work are quite extraordinary as he shows the level of depth through the video.

Week 6 – Task 3

Definition of ideology can be found in Glossary, which is part of question 1.

The Paris Peace Accords of January 27, 1973 intended to establish peace in Vietnam and an end to the #VietnamWar. It ended direct U.S. military combat, and temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam.:

The ideology of an individual can shape the way you view and agree or disagree with this image. This visual text has a very obvious opinionated view. The image states a anti-war stance and therefore is opinionated. The ideology of someone will therefore decide whether they agree with image or not, for example, if I was pro- Vietnam War i would disagree that the U.S should stop the war against Vietnam because my ideology is that we were doing the right thing in Vietnam.

Week 6 Task A

Week 5 – Task 4

VIETNAMESE PROPAGANDA POSTER ART ( vietnam war / peace / anti war poster ):

This image was created during the Vietnam War against the USA, and was a anti-war propaganda poster. It depicts an arm of the US with a bomb in hand being held down by another hand, as well as a hand situated to the top of the page holding a dove. Signifying peace not war, telling specifically the U.S to stop the war in Vietnam. The colour scheme is limited to a red and orange, with black and white. I believe the red and orange signifies the napalm bombs that came from the U.S like the bomb held in the hand. This imagery depicts the destruction brought by this war. The dove itself is a symbolic gesture of peace and therefore creates a uniformed image of; ‘peace not war’ and aims specifically at U.S. Mirzoeff comes into this image through his explanation of wars created through land and opinions, the loss of life for land and the effect it has on many people who encounter it.

Week 5 – Task 2

The ability to gauge a person’s eyes and torture someone to kill them is simply something i can’t comprehend especially when that person is only guilty of being a different race which is regarded less superior. This to me was a stand alone point that I took out of all others, what confuses and saddens me most is that people can be stubborn to think they are so right about something they are willing to kill and torture for it. However, relief came as I read further and saw that the mother took action and had a open casket and his funeral and allowed photographers to photograph her son which had become unrecognizable due to the amount torture he went through. The result was nationally, and had over 50,000 people came to mourn. This to me showed how powerful media can became and what a strong tool it can be.
